Power in Tasmania

There is only one electricity retailer in Tasmania: Aurora Energy. They chose to not participate in the Green Electricity Watch Survey.

Tasmania’s electricity is primarily supplied by old, large hydroelectric power stations. This has led many customers to feel that they have a clean electricity supply. However, there are many environmental and other impacts of such large-scale hydro dams, which is why it cannot be included as a Green Power accredited source.

Things are expected to change for Tasmania once the connection across Bass Strait brings electricity from coal-fired power stations.

Green Power products?

There is no Green Power accredited product available from Aurora Energy.

However, consumers can subscribe to the ActewAGL Green Choice program and pay the additional fee (4.5 cents per kilowatt hour) and ACTEWAGL will purchase the nominated amount (5, 10 or 15 kWh) of electricity from Green Power accredited renewable generation.
