The power generation industry plans to increase our greenhouse gases by 40 Mt(million tonnes) of CO2 each year. This would be equivalent to doubling the number of cars in Australia. Over their lifetime, the six developments listed below would pump out 763.5 Mt of CO2.

CO2 emissions from existing power stations = 40 Mt p.a.

CO2 emissions from Kogan Creek = 7 Mt p.a.
Queensland Government Company.
CO2 emissions from existing power stations = 60 Mt p.a.
CO2 emissions from extending Mt Piper = 9.5 Mt p.a.
CO2 emissions from Project Waratah = 6.3 - 7.2 Mt p.a.

Energy efficiency is a major economic opportunity. An Australian Government study has conservatively estimated that if all economically beneficial energy efficiency measures were exploited by 2012:
•GDP would be $3.4 billion higher.
•Employment would be around 11,000 people more.
•Greenhouse gas emissions would be 53 Mt lower.
•Energy use would be around 320 PJ lower (15 per cent lower).
