Changes in rainfall & water systems

South Australia (SA)

Despite trends in some parts of the State, Adelaide has been marked as one of the most vulnerable cities for receiving low water supplies under future climate change scenarios. Under predicted climate change South Australia is likely to experience a decrease in winter water runoffs up to 25% by the year 2070. This will lead to an associated decrease in soil moisture by up to 10% (Chiew et al 2002).

Observed trends in rainfall from the period 1951 to 2001 saw South Australia becoming slightly wetter with up to 2mm more rainfall per year (ABS 2003). Sections of the south-eastern coastline contrasted this, showing less rainfall by up to 1mm per year (ABS 2003).
