Water for cities

Darwin, Northern Territory

Whilst cities in Southern Australia will most likely experience a decline in water supply and quality, residents of Darwin can expect to receive an increase in water supply under expected climate change scenarios (CSIRO 2002). Few water supply systems in the Northern Territory show signs of stress. This is particularly evident with none of the 40 surface water management areas, and as few as 5 out of the 55 groundwater management units being classified as highly or overdeveloped (DEH 2005). This situation is likely to remain constant under climate change scenarios and low population growth and associated water yield. Currently, average Northern Territory water use consumes just 2% of Australia's total allocated water use (DEH 2005).
